Mongolian cashmere: why is it considered the best in the world?

Le cachemire mongol : pourquoi est-il considéré comme le meilleur au monde ? - Studio cashmere8

Cashmere, a fiber like no other

Cashmere has fascinated people for centuries. Soft, light, warm without being heavy, it alone embodies the idea of understated and sustainable luxury. But behind this generic word lie very different realities. Not all cashmere is created equal. And among the origins that are world-renowned, Mongolia holds a special place.

Why? That's precisely what we're going to explore.

A fiber born from extreme conditions

Cashmere comes from the down of Capre Hisca goats, a fine and silky undercoat that the animals naturally develop to protect themselves from harsh winters. And Mongolian winters are among the toughest on the planet.

On the high plateaus of Mongolia, temperatures can drop to -40°C. It is precisely this climatic requirement that makes Mongolian cashmere of exceptional quality: to survive, the goats produce down of incomparable fineness and density. Nature, here, is the first artisan of luxury.

The more extreme the climate, the finer the fiber. The finer the fiber, the softer the cashmere. It's as simple and as remarkable as that.

A millennia-old breeding tradition

Mongolian nomadic herders raise their goats according to practices passed down from generation to generation. They know their animals, respect their rhythms, adapt their movements to the seasons. This nomadic lifestyle, in harmony with nature, guarantees animal welfare that is directly reflected in the quality of the fiber.

Each spring, the down is harvested by hand, by delicate combing, never by shearing. A precise, ancestral gesture that preserves the integrity of the fiber and the comfort of the animal. A goat produces an average of 150 to 200 grams of down per year. Barely enough to knit a sweater.

It is this rarity, as much as this quality, that makes the value of Mongolian cashmere.

What science says

Mongolian cashmere is distinguished by the fineness of its fibers, measured in microns. A micron is a thousandth of a millimeter. High-quality cashmere is below 16 microns, which is twice as fine as a human hair. For comparison, standard wool is around 30 microns.

This extreme fineness explains the characteristic softness of Mongolian cashmere, its total absence of prickling on the skin, and its ability to naturally regulate body temperature, warm in winter, surprisingly cool in summer.

Not all origins are equal

There is cashmere in Afghanistan, Iran, China, Scotland. Each has its qualities. But Mongolian cashmere enjoys a global consensus among textile experts: it offers the best balance between fineness, resistance, and softness.

The reason lies in the climate, the altitude, the breeding practices, and a sector that, in Mongolia, has managed to preserve its traditional methods in the face of pressure from mass industry.

At Studio Cashmere8, the choice of Mongolian cashmere is not a marketing argument. It's a conviction born from a journey to the heart of the steppe, an encounter with the herders, an intimate understanding of what this fiber truly represents.

Traceable cashmere, from herd to knit

Choosing Mongolian cashmere is good. Knowing exactly where it comes from and how it was processed is even better.

At Studio Cashmere8, every step of production is controlled directly, from fiber harvesting to final knitting. The cashmere is certified OEKO-TEX, guaranteeing the total absence of harmful substances in the manufacturing process. A charter on animal welfare and environmental respect has been signed with each partner.

The result: an exceptional piece, beautiful to wear and honest to choose.

Investing in Mongolian cashmere is investing in longevity

A quality Mongolian cashmere sweater, well-maintained, can accompany you for ten, fifteen, twenty years. It doesn't go out of style. It softens with time, gains character, becomes a second skin.

That's true luxury, not the kind that's displayed, but the kind that lasts.
